First of all, Toshiba Fire offers at least some modest HDR color delivery: full support for 10-bit color with very little banding of colors during reproduction of content with 1.07 billion RGB color values. This is good and it makes the color grading during playback of HDR content look very nice on the LF621U19’s screen. On the other hand, the Toshiba LF621U19 has no wide color gamut (WCG) color space coverage, which is even more important for true delivery of high dynamic range color in the right kind of content. The Amazon Fire TV only covers a modest 80.02% of the DCI-P3 color space, and WCG color requires at least 91% coverage. The difference is large.

For my money, the single most significant new feature is HDMI 2.1 certification for all four of the C9’s HDMI ports. With HDMI 2.1, the C9 can offer 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second (FPS), support for enhanced audio return channel (eARC), variable refresh rate (VRR), and auto low latency mode.

Finally, four HDMI 2.1 ports are also implemented, offering support for high frame rate (HFR) 120 fps playback, enhanced audio return channel (eARC), and gaming features like variable refresh rate (VRR) and an automatic low latency mode (ALLM). With that said, select HDMI 2.1 features will require a future firmware update to operate.

The Toshiba Fire is also moderately decent for use as a PC monitor if you want to do HD or 4K gaming on it, but it’s not extremely versatile. It’s compatible with multiple resolution and color formats and offers smooth frame rate handling between PC GPUs and what the screen delivers natively (60Hz). But other key PC connectivity options are sort of missing with this 4K TV, though the important ones are present. This TV offers up the following specific specs: • 1080p @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 • 1440p @ 60Hz • 4k @ 60Hz • 4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 What it doesn’t support is the following: • 1080p @ 120Hz • 4k @ 30Hz @ 4:4:4 • 4k @ 120Hz

Despite sitting lower down in the QLED line-up, the Q70 includes the same comprehensive smart platform, extensive connections, and cutting-edge features found further up the range. This isn’t the flashiest-looking TV that Samsung has ever made, but if your funds are limited the Q70 is a cracking QLED all-rounder that’s worth checking out.

According to Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, “I still remember that on September 5, 2013, we released the first generation of Xiaomi TV. At that time, I did not expect that in such a mature and fully competitive industry, Xiaomi, as a beginner in TV manufacturing, climbed to the top of Chinese market in just over five years.”

The Osmo Action can record 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, which is par for the course these days. Full HD video is available up to 240 fps for 8x slow motion, and the camera can even shoot HDR (high dynamic range) video at 4K/30. The most important feature, however, is the RockSteady electronic image stabilization (which, as it happens, is not compatible with HDR mode).

Sure, you might have brought home a 4K television just last week. But there’s no stopping the march of progress, and Samsung is at the vanguard with this set. It’s an 8K panel—roughly 8,000 pixels wide and packing four times as many points of light as a 4K TV. Anyone with cash to burn can plop this 125-pound beast onto a stout pedestal and be engulfed by the 85-inch display. And while 8K content is rarer than an albino wombat, over the next few years broadcasters should start screening sports and special events in the new format.

As for why Sony calls its biggest and best TVs the Master Series: It’s a snap to buy the 98-inch TV if you’re Tiger Woods, and you took home the $2,070,000 winner’s paycheck and green jacket at the Masters golf tournament. In fact, every one of the top 31 players at the Masters — down to Bryson DeChambeau, Charley Hoffman, and Louis Oosthuizen tied for 29th and took home $78,200 each — could afford the big Sony with that one check. Tiger may want help bringing the TV home. He weighs 185 pounds; the box with the TV, table stand and floor stand weigh in at a total of 394 pounds.
